TEACHING STUDENTS TO THINK in ELT

Based on Herbert Puchta’s Proposal

*Cognitive-Engaging Activity Design * Higher-order Thinking Abilities*

February 23 and 24, 2017

The Aims of ELT Conference 2017

As they progress through their years of formal education, children need to acquire far more than the factual knowledge prescribed by curricula. They need to leave school equipped to face the challenges of a changing and unpredictable world.

When activities are designed for second language learners, there is a danger of removing any intellectual challenge in the attempt to make the activity comprehensible. What is the result? Children are frequently disenchanted by over-simple activities. Based on Herbert Puchta’s proposal the 1st English Teaching Conference for Region de Cuyo will focus on presenting Cognitive-Engaging Activity Design Techniques and will guide teachers to include Higher-order Thinking Abilities when preparing lessons. This will help them suit both their students’ language level and their cognitive potential. Can we train our students to know how to compare? how to categorize? how to sequence? how to make decisions or how to solve problems? The present Conference aims at answering these questions and several more.
