The Sphinx Educational Fund, Inc. (SEF) and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) are proud to present the 19th Anniversary SEF Thurgood Marshall College Fund Brunch to the Phoenix community. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall was a shining example of the commitment to leadership, excellence and compassion for which both organizations stand and now host this annual fundraising and recognition event.

Our theme for this year’s brunch is: “The Importance of Civic & Community Engagement in America.”

Our keynote speaker, Milton C. Davis, Esq. will deliver a powerful message that addresses the theme and gives students and professionals the encouragement they need to make an impact on the world today. Attorney Davis was a significant contributor to the successful pardoning of Clarence Norris, the last surviving Scottsboro Boy. The remaining Scottsboro Boys were posthumously pardoned. Davis also served as the 29th General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. where he created the fraternity's World Policy Council in 1996.

We will continue our tradition of presenting the Thurgood Marshall Award of Merit to Arizonans who have demonstrated outstanding commitments to making Phoenix, the State of Arizona, and the world better. This year’s recipients are Rev. Benjamin N. Thomas, Sr., Senior Pastor of Tanner Chapel A.M.E. Church and Roy Tatem, community leader, activist, entrepreneur, and political strategist. Both have dedicated their lives to the principles of justice, equality and excellence that remain fundamental tenets of Justice Marshall's legacy.

We respectfully request that you join us as we come together to celebrate the life and legacy of the Honorable Thurgood Marshall on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023 at 9 AM at the Desert Willow Conference Center, 4340 E. Cotton Center Blvd., Suite 100, Phoenix, Arizona 85040.

About the organizer

The Sphinx Educational Fund (SEF) was established with the mission of working toward the realization of two goals: 1) To raise and award scholarship money to help fund post secondary education for deserving youth here in Arizona and nationally.  It has been our passion to help deserving youth, who are High school Juniors and Seniors within Maricopa County, with achieving their goal of successfully attending a College or University and earning a degree.  2)  To recognize and award Arizona community stalwarts who demonstrate leadership and excellence in the community in a way that honors the legacy of Justice Thurgood Marshall.

Our primary vehicle to help accomplish these goals is our Annual Thurgood Marshall College Fund Brunch, a partnership between the national Thurgood Marshall College Fund organization and the local Sphinx Educational Fund focused on raising funds to achieve the aforementioned goals.  Each year, our goal has been to raise a minimum of $50,000 through corporate sponsorships, advertisements and ticket sales.

Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall was a shining example of the commitment to leadership, excellence and compassion for which both Funds stand.  Accordingly, the Sphinx Educational Fund is proud to present this event in conjunction with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.  For the past seven years, this has been a signature fund raising event within the Greater Phoenix community with an audience that includes members of the business community, clergy, political and community leaders, as well as, students and scholars.

We respectfully urge you to get involved with this magnificent, tax-deductible,[1] event which will promote awareness of educational issues and celebrate community contributions from local citizens.
