Look Up and Sketch Something New!
Don’t just sketch what’s in front of you—look up to discover a whole new world of sketching subjects!
It’s true. There is excitement in drawing new subjects up there!
Have you ever tried drawing from low angle, but the resulting sketch doesn’t capture the upward perspective? That something is off and you couldn’t possibly pin it? Yes, that is the shift in perspective.
In this workshop, Mel will demonstrate some loose-style sketching techniques that suggest a high angle view. You will carefully observe the visual clues that suggest a shift in perspective to help make a better drawing of the subject above eye level.
You will do small sketches for speed and clarity. For example, drawing the underside, you will focus on the bottom planes of the subject. When drawing the vertical perspective you will see that lines in parallel will seem to converge towards the top of the page, and you will learn about foreshortening: to convey that objects closer to you (the bottom) will appear larger than those further away (the top).
You will also identify key scene elements/details that lend more interest to the viewer. (I.e. foreground, middle ground, and background.)
At the end of the workshop, the students will demonstrate a good understanding of these key elements that can be applied when building a scene. Combine all of these together and there’s your sketch story to tell!
