How will I earn points in the competition?

Throughout the event, competitors can earn points through log analysis, response tactics, root cause analysis, security control review, policy notes/improvement, the final incident report, and defense tactics.    The best response notes, findings, follow up notes, and report will take first place

Is food provided?

Yes, every paid attendee will receive food during the 7:00 break as we review each team's incident report.  Food options will include: Chicken wings, flatbreads, veggies, and similar.  If you have any food allergies, please notify us at info@counterattackcyber.com so we can review potential options

Why should I compete?

Free food, friendly competition, and an Incident Challenge Completion Certificate for all competitors!  Only first place wins the award and Visa gift cards, but all competitors will be able to see areas of strength noted on their Completion Certificate to boost your resume.

Can we bring our computers to the competition?

Computers are allowed but not required to be brought for the event.  This is a blue team / incident response exercise, so computers will only be used for research.  However, use of ChatGPT or other AI tools is prohibited during this competition

What is the room setup like?

The meeting space at the Hyatt is setup in a classroom style with each team at their own table.  Each team may only have a max of 3 members and will sit at the same table to encourage collaboration to submit one incident report per team.  Individuals may submit their own report if not on a team

Is there parking available?

There are a lot of great parking options downtown.  The music city center is nearby for about $15, and there are valet parking options at the Hyatt.  We do have a discount option for Hyatt parking if you reach out at karissa@counterattackcyber.com, but the most affordable is the music city center

Can I bring members from my company?

Yes!  Up to 3 members from your company can compete and will be sat at the same table to increase collaboration.  Should more than 3 members want to compete, please contact Karissa at karissa@counterattackcyber.com

Are there breaks scheduled?

Accepted Answer

Yes, there will be small breaks throughout the competition.  If needed, the competition will extend to 7:30 PM, but we are scheduled to be complete around 7:15 PM.

Do I need to be a TN resident to compete?

Nope! Anyone can compete regardless of living location, we just recommend competing with incident response experience (1 year minimum, 3-8 years recommended)

What qualifications do I need to compete?

We recommend competitors have at least 1+ years of incident response experience.

Question 12

If we are on a team, can we submit more than one incident report?

Accepted Answer

Each team may only submit 1 incident report for final analysis, and individuals not on a team may submit their own report.

What qualifications does the event host have?

Accepted Answer

The event host has 10+ years technical experience, 5 active cyber certifications (CEH, CySA+, Security X, ECIH, Security +), worked as a CIRT Manager for Ally Bank, an Incident Response Lead for the Army National Guard, and Technical Lead for Palo Alto

How do I win $150 if I get first place?

If you choose to compete without a team and earn the most points, you will receive $150 total in visa gift cards.  Due to the challege of the competition though, we recommend joining with a team (3 people max) and each winning member would receive $50 visa gift card and a team take-home trophy

How Can I prepare for the event?

We recommend reviewing NIST incident response process (NIST 800-61 rev 3) as it will help you during the competition. Competitors are welcome to bring the document to the event to use a reference point, and computers are allowed during the competition

What do I get for competing?

Accepted Answer

All competitors receive a certificate showing your earned points from the competition.  Competitors also receive food during the 7:00 PM break while reports are analyzed to determine a winner.  The winner or winning team receive 3 total $50 Visa gift cards and one 1st place Incident Response Trophy.

What if I do not have a team?

You are welcome to compete alone, but we recommend being on a team to encourage collaboration success.
