Description

One Year: 1968, An American Odyssey Book Club

Tuesday, October 16, 2018, 5:30 p.m.

Join staff from the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) and the DC Public Library for a monthly discussion of portraits and prose commemorating the 50th anniversary of the museum and 1968. Each month, an NPG staff member will lead a tour of the exhibit One Year: 1968, An American Odyssey. Following the tour, a DCPL librarian will lead a discussion of a featured book related to the portraits, Washington, D.C., and 1968.

On October 16, we will discuss Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly.

Before John Glenn orbited the earth, or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space. Hidden Figures follows the interwoven accounts of Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden - four African American women who participated in some of NASA's greatest successes. It chronicles their careers over nearly three decades as they faced challenges, forged alliances, and used their intellect to change their own lives, and their country's future.

Other dates in this series:
September 18 - Hendrix on Hendrix, Interviews and Encounters with Jimi Hendrix by Steven Roby

November 13 - An Organizers Tale: Speeches by Cesar Chavez and Ilan Stavans (editor)
