Description

One Year: 1968, An American Odyssey Book Club

Tuesday, November 13, 2018, 5:30 p.m.

Join staff from the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) and the DC Public Library for a monthly discussion of portraits and prose commemorating the 50th anniversary of the museum and 1968. Each month, an NPG staff member will lead a tour of the exhibit One Year: 1968, An American Odyssey. Following the tour, a DCPL librarian will lead a discussion of a featured book related to the portraits, Washington, D.C., and 1968.

On November 13, we will discuss An Organizers Tale: Speeches by Cesar Chavez and Ilan Stavans (editor).

One of the most important civil rights leaders in American history, Cesar Chavez was a firm believer in the principles of nonviolence, and he effectively employed peaceful tactics to further his cause. Through his efforts, he helped achieve dignity, fair wages, benefits, and humane working conditions for hundreds of thousands of farm workers. This extensive collection of Chavez's speeches and writings chronicles his progression and development as a leader, and includes previously unpublished material.

Other dates in this series:
