17th Annual Cultural Insights Forum
Tue, June 6, 2017, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM EDT
Since its inception in 2001, the mission of Horowitz’s Cultural Insights Forum has been to tell the story, through research and insights, about the multicultural audiences for content creators, content distributors, and advertisers. We have advocated for and provided a platform for the voices of these audiences, with the goal of reshaping old, stereotypical narratives around multicultural audiences. These narratives not only hamper growth and opportunity for the TV and media industry, we in the media actually play a major role in perpetuating damaging myths and painful racial and ethnic divisions through these narratives.
The 2016 presidential campaign and the aftermath of the election are a powerful wake-up call that these narratives must be reexamined.
This year’s Forum theme is Reshaping Narratives. Many of our discussions will center on the need to shift away from siloed, simplistic, one-dimensional narratives about Hispanic, Black, Asian, and other international audiences, and consider how the intersectionality of race, sex, socioeconomics, and other factors affect how audiences might view themselves, how they view the world, and what they want and expect from the media. Moreover, as researchers, we will unpack the role of data and insights in shaping—and now reshaping—these narratives towards a more sophisticated, useful view of multicultural audiences today.
