World Petunia Days

Petunia has become an important scientific model organism to study many aspects of plant biology: not only in most areas of cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, development and evolution but also for studying interactions with mycorrhiza and pollinators. Recently, the two wild parents of P. hybrida (the garden petunia), P. axillaris and P. inflata have been sequenced, opening up the fields of genome evolution and genome structure as well. Furthermore, topics as transposon activity for forward and reverse genetic screens, plant architecture, floral color and scent, self-incompatibility, interactions with microbes and responses to abiotic stress are also studied with Petunia. See for instance https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpls.2016.00072/full

The World Petunia Days bring together a group of Petunia scientist that discusses the scientific progress made in the fields mentioned above. This occurs in an informal setting through presentations and discussions. Participants are encouraged to submit an abstract on their work and to present their work at the meeting with starts on Thursday evening with dinner and reception. The scientific part of the meeting starts early on Friday morning and continues on Saturday till late afternoon. The meetings ends after the business meeting on Sunday morning to which all participants are invited to discuss common goals and projects for the Petunia scientific community.
