150th Cardigan Bay Regatta
Overview
Cardigan Bay Regatta is a historic 3-day sailing and inshore sports regatta that is hosted annually in New Quay, Wales. The regatta was first held in 1870 and will be holding its 150th event in 2026.
Inshore sports
Each year the regatta holds numerous FREE competitions for both children and adults across the 3-day event. These events include:
- Sandcastle competition (children only)
- Barrel filling competition
- Treasure hunt
- Swiming races
- Kayaking/Paddleboard races
- Briwydd (model boat building)
- Crab catching competition
Each of these events are free to enter and prizes are awarded to entrants who place in 3rd, 2nd and 1st.
Note: Equipment required to compete in each event(crabbing nets, kayaks, paddleboards etc.) will not be provided by CBR.
Offshore sports
If you're an experienced sailor, the regatta hosts various dinghy and keelboat races over the three-day event. Races accommodate a variety of boat classes, with handicap racing for high- and low-performance dinghies, while cruisers race under the IRC system.
All dinghy races take place off the main pier and remain within the surrounding bay of New Quay while cruiser races vary from local area races to passage races from Fishguard, Cardigan and Aberystwyth.
Note for any sailors: These are paid entry races that require sign up prior to any race. Sign up can be completed at New Quay Yacht Club from the evening of the 17th of August 2026. A mix of both dinghy and keelboat races are held across the three-day regatta. There is a pre-race briefing on the 18th of August, which isn't mandatory but attendence is recommended.
Cardigan Bay Regatta is a non-profit organisation ran by volunteers and funded through sponsorships and donations.
