Description

13th GrACe TECHNICAL WORKSHOP ON SUSTAINABLE TEACHING : Planning and Designing Sustainability in Architectural Teaching and Learning Outcomes

Sustainability is being taken increasingly seriously across the higher education sector. A massively important aspect of the sustainability agenda concerns integration of sustainable thinking within a teaching programme and make it an integral aspect of students' experiences. The terms ‘education for sustainable development’ (ESD), ‘environmental education’ (EE), and ‘education for sustainability’ (EfS) are used interchangeably in the literature. Sustainability in teaching is based on a number of theoretical and conceptual frameworks, all of which have implications for learning outcomes. Writing learning outcomes for teaching sustainability requires the consideration and integration of several types of attributes and skills, such as:

a) Cognitive domain: Mental skills where the brain must be used to perform intellectual tasks, knowledge → 'think'

b) Psychomotor domain: Physical skill such as movement, coordination, action. → 'do‘

c) Affective domain: feelings emotions and behavior, i.e., attitude, belief → 'feel'

The aim of this workshop is to provide participants with a good understanding of outcome-based education (OBE) in Architecture. Participants will consider planning around different types of learner and apply a planning model to design their teaching on sustainability. There will also be an opportunity to consider underpinning models and ideas about teaching and learning to help participants adopt a teaching strategy suited to student’s learning objectives on sustainability. The workshop will provide information on how to develop learning outcomes on sustainability.

Workshop Outcome

Upon completion of the workshop the participant will be able to

●Identify principles of good practice in teaching sustainability and sustainable development.

●Recognise factors involved in promoting learning for the students of Architecture.

●Appraise appropriate teaching methodologies for environmental theory and design studio courses.

●Identify different stages involved in preparing a learning session.

●Design and implement a planning strategy for the delivery of sustainable learning outcomes.

●Analyse tools and resources that can support delivery of effective learning.

●Enabled to know the expectations of the learners and how it is possible to make the learning process interesting and interactive.

●Write learning outcomes for the courses they teach.

Workshop Instructor

Dr MD ASHIKUR RAHMAN JOARDER BArch, MArch, PhD, MIAB

Department of Architecture (DoA), BUET has started implementing Quality Assurance of Architecture Education under the broader directives of University Grants Commission (UGC), and direct supervision of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) in BUET. Quality Assurance is pursued through Self-Assessment. This Self-Assessment process is part of the UGC and the Ministry of Education, GoB sponsored project, ongoing in BUET along with other Public Universities. Dr Joarder is working as the Member Secretary of Self-Assessment Committee (SAC), DoA, BUET. As part of the work, SAC organized and facilitated workshops on Quality Assurance in Architecture Education where, in addition to 7 Architect Alumni and 11 Students from different levels, 26 Teachers of the Dept. of Architecture, BUET was trained.

Dr Joarder is working as an Associate Professor at the Dept. of Architecture (DoA), BUET, have architecture and teaching background for more than a decade, including research experience on the use of ambient environment monitors, and building simulation, to improve visual, therapeutic, and safe environments of educational, industrial, commercial and healthcare facilities. He has collaborative research and training experience with Loughborough University, UK; University of Maryland, USA; Kyushu University, Japan; University of California, San Diego, USA; and international organisations, e.g. ILO; NFPA and UNEP. At present, he is working as the Coordinator, Green Architecture Cell (GrACe), DoA, BUET; Sub-Project Manager, HEQEP CP. No. 6041 awarded by University Grant Commission (UGC) Bangladesh, funded by World Bank; Project Director of Committee for Advanced Studies & Research (CASR), BUET Grant Research; Academic Member of Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER), belonging to the Architecture Research Unit and the Environment Research Unit; Honorary Member, International Advisory Board of Institute for Research and Development India (IRDIndia); and Member, International Advisory Board, I7C-17, Institute for Engineering Research and Publication (IFERP), India. Dr Joarder regularly conduct, facilitate and participate (as expert/keynote speaker) at conferences, seminars, workshops and knowledge transfer events inside and outside Bangladesh (e.g. The Netherlands, Greece, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, UK and USA) and made over 100 high quality presentations based on his work, individually and with other team members on the issue of Energy Efficiency, Sustainability and Green Architecture. He has also teaching experiences in the Schools of Civil & Building Engineering and Chemical Engineering, Loughborough University, UK (2011-12).

Dr Joarder has completed more than hundred Professional Development (PD) trainings (113 sessions totaling 308 hours) from UK (2008-12), including 17 courses on teaching skills, such as, ‘Embedding Sustainability in your Teaching’; ‘Teaching Skills for Postgraduates and Research Assistants: Preparing to Teach; Promoting Learning; Working with Small Groups’; ‘Student Learning through Critical Thinking’; ‘Planning and Designing for Teaching’; Transferable Skills in the Curriculum’; and completed ‘Successful Teaching and Assessment for Researchers (STARs)’ programme (2012): a certificate course conducted by the Teaching Centre and the Research Office, Loughborough University, UK. STARs bridges the gap between the Teaching Skills course, and the Associate Teaching Course (which provides national accreditation of teaching skills in UK).
