SESSION I:

Fundamentals of Cooperative Learning for the Community College Classroom

(An Introduction Workshop and the Pre-Requisite for all other trainings)


This highly interactive TWO DAY workshop is designed to educate, inspire, and rejuvenate community college educators across the curriculum. The workshop provides a conceptual framework and hands on experience in planning and implementing cooperative learning in the college classroom. The three types of cooperative learning are presented and demonstrated along with the five key elements associated with every cooperative learning lesson. Attendees learn numerous strategies for implementing both positive interdependence and individual accountability into every cooperative activity.

Forming and troubleshooting groups are presented along with the challenges of assessing or grading group work. Faculty members explore the differences between cooperative learning and simple group work. Participants have opportunities to develop discipline-specific cooperative learning activities which they can take back and implement into their classrooms immediately.

All content is presented in a cooperative, active learning environment where participants interact with not only the facilitator but all other trainees as well. The theoretical underpinnings associated with cooperative learning are presented allowing participants to engage in further exploration.

Target Audience: Teaching faculty (fulltime and adjunct), administrators, and counselors



SESSION II:

Cooperative Learning for Distance Learning (CL4DL)

(Prerequisite: must have completed a Fundamentals or equivalent training)


This TWO DAY workshop developed by SCALE is presented at the request of nearly every institution that has received training in “Introduction to Cooperative Learning.” Faculty will engage in activities associated with both synchronous and asynchronous environments utilizing Blackboard and other Learning Management Systems (LMS). Trainees will engage in a systematic review of cooperative learning types and elements with special attention given to those elements which fit within the distance learning framework.

Participants will discuss the importance of “netiquette” and will review legal, privacy, and ADA issues associated with online learning. The advantages and disadvantages of electronic communication will be shared while educators learn effective strategies for facilitating energetic and engaging discussion board conversations.

The workshop will introduce learners to applications such as Blackboard, Wimba, Adobe Connect, Illuminate, Cloud, and many others. Methods by which students can work to create tangible group projects utilizing such applications will be disseminated. The latest trends and “hot apps” will be shared with participants providing them the opportunity to return to their classrooms immediately and begin implementing newly-learned strategies.

All content is presented in a cooperative, active learning environment where participants interact not only with the facilitator but with all other trainees as well.

Target Audience: Faculty (fulltime and adjunct), counselors, curriculum/technology specialists, and administrators.

SESSION III

EPIC (Employability Practices in the Classroom)

EPIC training is an energetic TWO DAY workshop in which community college educators will develop strategies to build and nurture professionalism and employability in their student population. Participants will learn about the growing need to teach and reinforce employability practices at the college level. SCALE facilitators will define employability skills then show what makes these skills critical to student success in college and beyond. Facilitators will lead attendees through a variety of activities to better understand the development of a mindset for success. Attendees will translate this understanding into specific lessons and strategies to nurture that mindset for success in their students. Guided by the facilitators, attendees will evaluate current classroom practices and develop individual action plans that build on what they already do well. Even though a number of employability concepts will be discussed in the workshop, special emphasis will be placed on the incorporation of professionalism and self-management skills across the curriculum.

All content in this workshop will be presented in a cooperative, active learning environment where participants interact with not only the facilitator but all other trainees. The focus will be on practical applications grounded in research.
