Event Details

Event Pics 2011

The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation (BLF) is pleased to host our 13th Annual Kayak Batiquitos Lagoon Clean-up event, sponsored by REI Outdoor School and their Encinitas store, 1590 Leucadia Blvd., Encinitas, CA 92024 ((769) 944-9020)We also thank California's Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) for again being a partner with us in this very important clean-up event of Batiquitos Lagoon Ecological Reserve and helping to maintain and preserve its health.  Your event ticket purchase is tax deductible and helps sustain our all volunteer organization.  All participants will have up to 90 minutes on the lagoon.

We have 4 launching opportunities begining at 8:00 AM, with the last being 2:00 PM.  We are initially able to provide single kayaks, and are working to provide a limited number of tandem kayaks.  Check our website peridocially as we will add additional tandem kayak ticket opportuntiesets for each launch if we are successful.  Subject to time-slot availability, you may register and bring your own kayaks (singles or tandems).  The ticket price is based, however, on a per person tax deductible donation to the BLF of $60 plus processing fee.

All participtants MUST agree to, and complete and sign ALL waivers (can be completed in advance at the REI Encinitas store or at the BLF nature center); sign the event log at the event site; and receive a safety briefing at the the launch site.  We will provide assistance in getting participants to and from the launch site, including transport of personal kayaks.  We reserve the right to inspect and approve the use of any kayak brought for the event.  Everyone must wear an approved Personal Floation Device (PFD) while on the lagoon - NO EXCEPTIONS.  No one under twelve (12) years of age will be allowed on the lagoon in single kayaks.  A lower age limit may apply for children accompanied by an adult in a tandem kayak.  A prent or guardian must  participate and be with their child (e.g.,  under age 12) in the same tandem kayak (e.g., requires a tandem kayak for each child under age 12).  This means you must purchase 2 tickets for the launch and assume responsibiliy for their behavior and adherence to the event rules.

Gloves, trash bags, and clean-up tools will be available.  You may bring your own as well.

Onsite registration will be available on a first-come-first-served basis on the day of the event, subject to the availability openings.  Cash, checks and major credit cards will be accepted on the day of the event for walk-up registrations.  Advanced purchased BLF T-shirts can be picked up at the check-in area.  BLF T-shirts will also be available for purchase at the check-in table.

Important Event Rules All Participants Agree to When Registering

1.  All participants MUST agree to complete and sign ALL liability waivers.  These waivers may be completed in advance at the REI Encinitas store or at the BLF nature center.  A sign-in event log must be completed at the event check-in and registration table before anyone  may participate – NO EXCEPTIONS.

2.  The minimum age to participate in the event is twelve (12) years of age for single kayaks.  A lower age limit will apply for children who are with a parent or guardian in a tandem kayak – NO EXEPTIONS.  This is an insurance liability requirement!

3.  Parents or legal guardians are responsible for their children or young adults under the age of 16 and that they comply with the event rules and on-the-water guides/instructors/event leaders.

4.  U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Floatation Devices (PFD’s) must be worn by all participants while on the water. Appropriate PDF’s will be provided with all provided kayaks by event organizers. Those bringing their own kayaks are responsible for their own PFD’s and will be subject to inspection and approval by guides/instructors/event leaders before launch.

5.  Only kayaks are allowed. No paddle boards, boogie boards, surf boards, or other floatation devices are permitted within the Batiquitos Lagoon Ecological Reserve and State Marine Conservation Area (NO TAKE) areas.  Event organizers may use inner-tubes and other devices to assist in trash removal and for safety-related matters.

6.  No fishing or fishing equipment is allowed on the lagoon.  Batiquitos Lagoon is a designated "NO TAKE" State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) which means that other than trash, marine life cannot be removed from the area (including shells).

7.  No smoking is allowed inside the chain-link fence area or within the Ecological Reserve.

8.  This is a NO ALCOHOL event.

9.  No swimming is allowed within the Batiquitos Lagoon Ecological Reserve (BLER) or the Batiqitos Lagoon State Marine Conservation Area (NO TAKE) (SMCA).

10.  All participants MUST remain in their kayaks at all times, except when getting into and out of their kayaks. Exceptions can be made by event organizers to remove trash such as tires, appliances, and other items. Such exceptions must be approved in advance and will be supervised by appropriate guides/instructors/event leaders.

11.  All participants agree to abide by and obey all rules and instructions by event organizers, leaders, and water guides. Those choosing to disobey such instructions may be asked to leave the area. No refunds will be provided if told to leave. All rules of the Batiquitos Lagoon Ecological Reserve and the Batiquitos Lagoon State Marine Conservation Area (NO TAKE) (SMCA) will be followed.

12.  While on the water, all kayaks will stay together with their guides/instructors/event leaders. Participants are not to explore on their own. Those disobeying may be asked to leave the event. No refunds will be provided if told to leave.

13.  No Dogs or other pets may be brought inside the chain-link fence area.

14.  In the unlikely event that a “provided” kayak is not available, the event organizers will try to reschedule the participant(s) to another available launch slot.  If another time-slot cannot be provided, a full refund will be offered.

15.  This is a "rain or shine" event.  In the unlickly event of a thunderstorm with lightning in the area, the participants will be led off the water to safety while it passes.  The BLF reserves the right if lightning occurs to reduce the launch time and for offering refunds.
