The Air Potato Rodeo is an annual park beautification day and resource management project held to help control the air potato vine (Dioscorea bulbifera) that is widespread at Ravine Gardens. Controlling this pest plant is crucial in maintaining the historic beauty of the formal gardens in the park. Air potato wranglers will assist park staff and volunteers in the collection of the potato-like tubers in efforts to control the spread of the vine.
All ages are invited to enjoy a day of resource management fun, refreshments, and community involvement. Prizes will be given for the most potatoes collected for individuals and groups. We will also have prizes for the largest potato, smallest potato, and weirdest potato, as well as the most golf balls collected. Admission into the park is free to participants and the first 100 volunteers to check-in the day of the event will receive a free t-shirt. Lunch will be provided by the Friends of Ravine Gardens, our Citizen Support Organization (CSO).
Gloves, trash bags and tools will be provided. Participants should wear long sleeves and pants, as well as close-toed shoes. Participants should bring a reusable water bottle, bug spray and sun screen.
