Narrative screen media - namely film and television - are highly accessible in this contemporary digital age, with the internet facilitating global sharing and the rise of viral content. The alarming speed of content proliferation has diminshed our ability to regulate media, and protect vulnerable audiences from consuming potentially harmful content about mental illness.

When someone mentions the word suicide, certain images are immediately called to mind, in the form of popular televisual and filmic renderings of the phenomenon. Perhaps the images shown are overly graphic; perhaps they’re unrealistic, unexplained, and poorly represented. They are unpleasant for the most hardened of us. But what sort of lasting impact are they having on our mental health? Worse still: what sort of harm is this, and other portrayals of mental illness, doing to the impressionable adolescent mind?

This symposium will unite experts from screen studies, psychology, and mental health education, to examine the impact of screen media on adolescent mental health and explore how this can be rectified through education initiatives to improve adolescent mental health and enhance understanding of mental illness.
