Event description
12th Annual East Bay Alternative Book and Zine Fest - online!

About this event

From the sparkling zine community of the Bay Area, the 12th Annual East Bay Alternative Book and Zine Fest (EBABZ) invites you to immerse yourself in a virtual ballroom of zine mania! EBABZ will feature over 50 vendors selling zines, comics, books, and art as well as workshops led by local artists and zinesters. This year’s theme is IRL/URL, and the flier was designed by long-time EBABZ team member Gill Dreher.

This year’s event will be hybrid due to the ongoing pandemic. Virtual tabling will occur on the EBABZ website the weekend of December 11–12. We will be hosting two in-person events, both at Rock Paper Scissors Collective (RPSC): an Oakland First Friday group exhibition opening (December 3rd) and an eight-fold zine making workshop on December 9th.

The East Bay Alternative Book and Zine Fest is an all volunteer-run and not-for-profit event dedicated to supporting, promoting, and educating the public about the zine, self-publishing, and DIY community of the Bay Area. EBABZ is put on in conjunction with Rock Paper Scissors Collective, a member-directed, all volunteer-run nonprofit organization that fosters creativity and collaboration in order to strengthen local communities, encourage sustainable creative practices, and explore alternative models.

In 2010, two Bay Area writers/zinesters decided it was time the East Bay had its own indie media celebration modeled on the amazing work people were doing in San Francisco and Portland. Tomas Moniz and MK Chavez organized the first East Bay Alternative Press Book Fair. It was a wonderful experience and a huge success, bringing over 50 participants into Berkeley City College. In 2011, Brooke Appler created the flyer and helped organize the event. Again the tables went quickly, with over 60 vendors and artists participating, and attendance doubled. In 2012, Tomas teamed up with the amazing Rock Paper Scissors Collective. Collective member Ara and volunteers Jamie, Olivia, and Crystal helped the event grow to new heights! That year also came with a new name: East Bay Alternative Book and Zine Festival, or EBABZ (say, "e-babes,") Fest for short. After several years at BCC and a stop at the David Brower Center in 206, EBABZ Fest is stoked to be bringing this year's zine extravaganza to Oakland for the very first time!
