Description

Assoc. Prof. Meidhbhín Ní Úrdail delivers the 12th Annual Barra Ó Donnabháin Lecture “Patrick Ferriter (1856-1924): an Irish scholar at home and abroad”. Originally from West Kerry, Ferriter emigrated to America in 1895 and lived in Massachusetts until 1902. He then settled in New York where he spent most of the remainder of his life. Ní Úrdail’s focus will be on Ferriter’s contribution to Irish scholarship and his literary legacy as evident today in the Ferriter Collection of Irish Manuscripts now in the library of University College Dublin.

A native of Co. Cork, Meidhbhín Ní Úrdail is Head of Modern Irish at University College Dublin. She is a leading authority on scribal practice in Ireland in the modern era and her publications include: The scribe in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Ireland: motivations and milieu (2000); Léann lámhscríbhinní Lobháin. The Louvain manuscript heritage (co-ed.) (2007); Cath Cluana Tarbh. ‘The Battle of Clontarf’ (2011); Sealbhú an traidisiúin (co-ed.) (2013); Mo ghnósa leas an dáin: aistí in ómós do Mháirtín Ó Direáin (co-ed.) (2014); Aon don éigse: essays marking Osborn Bergin’s centenary lecture on bardic poetry (co-ed.) (2015); Litríocht na Gaeilge ar fud an domhain I-II (co-ed.) (2016).

The Barra Ó Donnabháin Lecture was established by Glucksman Ireland House in 2006 to commemorate Barra Ó Donnabháin, a beloved and influential teacher and advocate of the language. Ó Donnabháin, from Leap, Co. Cork, took a degree in Irish and Latin at University College, Cork and immigrated to the US in 1963. One of the leading Irish linguists in the tri-state area, Barra wrote an Irish language column in the Irish Echo for many years as well as contributing essays and articles to a variety of other publications. In 2008 Daltaí na Gaeilge published a bilingual collection of 32 of his essays, Súil Siar: Cnuasach Aistí le Barra Ó Donnabháin, edited and translated by Hilary Mhic Suibhne, adjunct Irish language lecturer at NYU, and Eileen Zurrell, Daltaí na Gaeilge.

“Patrick Ferriter (1856-1924): an Irish scholar at home and abroad”

Ar na lámhscríbhinní Gaeilge atá ar buanchoimeád i Leabharlann an Choláiste Ollscoile, Baile Átha Cliath, tá naoi gcinn déag ar fhichid in aon bhailiúchán amháin darb ainm Bailiúchán an Fheiritéaraigh. I gcuimhne ar an úinéir bunaidh, Pádraig Feiritéar, ón mBaile Uachtarach i gCorca Dhuibhne, atá an bailiúchán seo ainmnithe. Ó fhianaise a chuid lámhscríbhinní, chuaigh an Feiritéarach an cuan amach go Meiriceá sa bhliain 1895 agus bhí sé lonnaithe i Massachusetts go dtí 1902. Bhog sé ansan go Nua Eabhrac mar ar chaith sé formhór a shaoil. Léargas ar an bhfear féin mar aon le súilfhéachaint ar a chuid lámhscríbhinní a bheidh idir lámhaibh ag Meidhbhín Ní Úrdail i Léacht Uí Dhonnabháin na bliana seo.

Corcaíoch ó dhúchas is ea an Comhollamh Meidhbhín Ní Úrdail agus tá sí ina Ceann ar an Nua-Ghaeilge sa Choláiste Ollscoile, Baile Átha Cliath. Údar áitithe is ea í ar oidhreacht lámhscríbhinní Gaeilge an ochtú agus an naoú céad déag. I measc a cuid foilseachán tá: The scribe in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Ireland: motivations and milieu (2000); Léann lámhscríbhinní Lobháin. The Louvain manuscript heritage (comheag.) (2007); Cath Cluana Tarbh. ‘The Battle of Clontarf’ (2011); Sealbhú an traidisiúin (comheag.) (2013); Mo ghnósa leas an dáin: aistí in ómós do Mháirtín Ó Direáin (comheag.) (2014); Aon don éigse: essays marking Osborn Bergin’s centenary lecture on bardic poetry (comheag.) (2015); Litríocht na Gaeilge ar fud an domhain I-II (comheag.) (2016).
