Continuum of Care – (a)

An overview for providers on meaning and function of each ASAM level of care

Introductory Course – Step 1 in the COC series

The use of the ASAM criteria in determining the provision of outcome-oriented and results-based care in the treatment of substance use disorders enhances a provider’s ability to thoroughly assess and appropriately place an individual in a level of care consistent with identified risk level and treatment need. This introductory training to the Continuum of Care expands upon the ASAM assessment by defining the Levels of Care under the DMC Waiver and connecting placement at each level to the clinical need of the individual. Participants will develop an understanding of the different Levels of Care, the intensity and type of services provided at each level, and the interaction between each level providing a continuum of support for individuals in substance use treatment.

Learning Objectives
1. Develop two reasons for use of continuum of care to enhance substance abuse treatment

2. Identify at least two ASAM Levels of Care and key treatment and organizational elements that distinguish each level

3. Describe the relation between assessment using the ASAM criteria and levels of care
