Description

11th GrACe TECHNICAL WORKSHOP ON SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRY: Development of Green and Safe Environment for RMG Workers

Readymade Garment (RMG) sector is one of the biggest consumers of energy and had the highest number of work-related fatalities among the different industrial sectors in Bangladesh. The indoor environment quality of RMGs is often affected by poor lighting, thermal and ventilation condition, creating an intolerably hot and uncomfortable working condition for the workers that is noncompliant with national and international standards and hampers productivity and safety of workers. It is expected that the concepts and methodology presented in this workshop will help the participants to comprehensively understand and characterize environmental considerations and fire-related risks that will help to realize the wide range of decisions that must be made as part of RMG design, construction and operation.

WORKSHOP OUTCOME

Upon completion of the workshop the participant will be able to

      • Recommend lighting and ventilation design strategies for RMG factories with respect to local climate satisfying both aesthetic and technical requirements.
      • Apply effective means to reduce energy consumption and excessive cooling load in RMG factories.
      • Describe how to protect RMG workers, workplaces, environment and economy from the devastating effects of fires.
      • Apply building codes and related reference standards for both active and passive fire protection.
      • Study fire safety status of existing RMG factories with respect to national and international context.
