About this event

The Rotary Club of Alexandria, as a member of the Strategic Water Alliance (SWA) of Rotary International District 7610, is hosting the 11th Annual Walk for Water. This year our walk will be held at Jones Point Park in Alexandria, VA on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 9:00 AM.

It’s estimated that 844 million people lack access to clean water according to WHO and 1000 children die each day due to illness caused by drinking contaminated water. Over the last 13 years the SWA has completed 47 projects totaling over $450,000.00, providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene to over 80,000 Global Citizens helping to solve this global problem.

This effort is accomplished through Global Grants from Rotary International and clubs from around the world. The Strategic Water Alliance consists of over 18 Clubs from our District 7610: Alexandria, Bailey’s Crossroads, Dulles International Airport, Dunn Loring-Merrifield, Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Rappahannock-Fredericksburg, Sterling, Great Falls, Herndon, Leesburg Evening, Leesburg Daybreak, Manassas Bull Run, McLean, Tysons Corner, Vienna, West Springfield, Gainesville-Haymarket.

Water and sanitation facilities keep students and teachers at schools. This has been an essential part of the program. Challenges exist when there is perhaps a maintenance issue way out in the bush and the locals don’t necessarily take the steps to remedy the situation. All the money raised from the walk goes directly to the projects in need.
