Save the Date for the Eleventh Annual Teacher Institute!
August 3-4, 2020 | Free
Join Library of Virginia staff members and guest speakers in this year’s two-day Teacher Institute. The eleventh annual Brown Teacher Institute will focus on legacies of slavery and racism in the Commonwealth and will offer tools, resources, and content to aid educators in teaching these topics in the classroom. The Institute will be virtual only and will feature guest speakers and live Q&As. Teachers will explore how to use primary sources to enhance student learning in their classrooms and discover new digital resources.
This year's Brown Teacher Institute keynote speaker, sponsored by Virginia Humanities, will feature Dr. Hasan Kwame Jeffries in conversation with Norfolk 4th grade teacher Chris Mathews. They will discuss the work Dr. Jeffries has done with the Southern Poverty Law Center's Teaching Hard History initiative, which has designed a framework for teaching slavery in K-12 classrooms.
Teachers must attend the entire Institute to receive a PD certificate.
Detailed schedule will be announced soon. Contact Emma Ito at emma.ito@lva.virginia.gov or Catherine Fitzgerald Wyatt at catherine.fitzgeraldwyatt.lva.virginia.gov with any questions.
