10th Annual Vassiliadis Lecture by Edward Watts

This lecture shows how, over the past 10 years, UCSD has built a distinctive

approach to late antique and Byzantine studies that emphasizes the place of Greek

and Roman identity in a Roman and Byzantine world in which Hellenism is very real

but also a component of a wider, ecumenical set of identities that guide Greek and

Roman life. It traces the evolution of these identities from Athens in the second

century AD through Constantinople and Nicaea in the aftermath of the Fourth

Crusade in the 1200s.
