About this Event

Hosted by Senator Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) and Representative Tavia Galonski (D-Akron), the 10th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Day at the Ohio Statehouse brings together advocates from around the state with one mission: ending human trafficking. This year's focus will be on the opioid crisis, and how it impacts and elevates the risk of human trafficking in Ohio.

Featuring a keynote address from Erik L. Bauer, an attorney from Tacoma, Washington who, in a nationwide precedent setting case ended immunity for Backpage.com on behalf of two 7th grade clients and one 9th grade client being sold on the webpage to as many as 20 adult sex customers per day, the 10th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Day is an opportunity to learn from and share best practices with Ohio's leaders on the issue.

Senator Teresa Fedor

Organizer of 10th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Day

Since 2010, Senator Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo), representing Ohio's 11th Senate District, has hosted the Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Day, growing to over one thousand participants over two days. Senator Fedor has unprecedented success in passing bills to fight human trafficking. In 2009, she passed legislation creating an Ohio Attorney General’s commission to study the issue in Ohio and a penalty enhancement for human traffickers. She now serves as the Chairperson of the Legislative and Legal Subcommittee of the Ohio Attorney General’s Human Trafficking Commission. In 2010, she passed legislation making human trafficking a stand-alone felony. In 2012, then-Representative Fedor passed The Safe Harbor Act, a comprehensive, victim-centered human trafficking bill. This legislation was followed by the End Demand Act, which tackles market-driven demand for human trafficking by increasing penalties for purchasing sex from minors. In 2018, alongside joint sponsor Representative Tavia Galonski (D-Akron), House Bill 461, a bill applying the same human trafficking offense to all victims under 18, passed the Ohio House of Representatives.
