Description

BOATS! BOATS! BOATS! Cardboard boats, that is. The MetroParks of Butler County presents the 10th Annual Crazy Cardboard Regatta on Saturday, July 20th from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Voice of America MetroPark in West Chester! Do you think you’ve got what it takes? Then, sign your team up to build your own cardboard boat and join the amazing race around the lake by clicking the "tickets" link! Sea legs aren’t quite ready; you say? No problem! Vendors, entertainment, activities, and more await you upon shore. Not to mention, the event is FREE for spectators and does not require registration! So, come on out for some summer family fun, and don’t forget to keep calm and boat on!

All vehicles entering any MetroPark of Butler County are required to display a valid Motor Vehicle Permit (MVP.) Permits are FREE for Butler County residents. Non-Butler County residents can purchase a $10 annual permit, which is valid January 1st through December 31st of each year, or a $5 daily permit.

Boat Builder Rules & Regulations

  1. All participants must be 8 years or older by the day of the event.
  2. All participants must wear a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) and it is recommended that each participant bring their own.MetroParks has a limited number of PFD’s available.
  3. Secure/safe footwear is required for all participants.Flip-flops will not be permitted.
  4. Participants will need to provide their own paddling devices(be creative!).
  5. Any participant thought to be under the influence of alcohol or drugswill be prohibitedfrom participating in the race.
  6. Boat Building Rules:
    1. Only corrugated cardboard may be used. It may be of any thickness but cannot be bonded to any other material such as vinyl. Non-corrugated material may not be used, especially the kind of resin or wax-type coating found in packing cases, unless for decoration only. No solid cardboard and no carpet roll tubes may be used.
    2. Wood, metal, Styrofoam, rubber inflatable devices or other materials that would provide buoyancy and/or other materials that would aid in flotation or make the hull rigidare prohibited. This applies to the keel, transom, ribs, hull, etc.
    3. No sandbags or similar materials may be used for ballast.
    4. Hulls may be painted with any “one-part” paint. No epoxy glues, fiberglass resins or “multi-part” varnishes or paints may be used. Hulls may not be “wrapped” in plastic, duct tape or anything else. Tar based substances like roof coatings are not permitted.
    5. Joints and seams may be glued and/or taped. Duct tape, contact cement, rubber cement or construction adhesive may be used. No nails or metal or wood fasteners or staples may be used in the final construction of the boat. Keep the crew’s safety on race day in mind during construction!
    6. Decorations may be made from any water soluble material but may not be used to reinforce the actual structure of the boat.
  7. Boats are subject to inspection anddisqualificationfor any violation of one or more of the Rules. Every attempt will be made to bring the boat into compliance prior to disqualification.
  8. All entrants must ensure that their portion of the pit area has been cleared and cleaned prior to departure. All boats must be removed from the park or placed in appropriate trash containers following the final race and no later than sundown July 20, 2019.
  9. Be Creative and Have Fun!!

Note:

  • All boats must be in compliance with the rules above to participate in any portion of the Regatta.
  • All registered boats will be grouped in heats according to boat type and ages of participants.
  • Boats will be judged for various themed and timed awards. All awards will be given after the last race is completed. Boats may have to race in more than one heat and all that are still afloat are invited to join the “Soggy Bottom Battle.”
  • Rules are subject to change and Committee’s decision on rule changes is final.
