Keynote Speaker: Peter Meijer - Chairman of the Board - Student Veterans of America, U.S. Army Veteran

Sponsored by the Ford Motor Company Fund

The officers of the Student Veterans of America at the University of Michigan cordially invite you to our 10th Anniversary Benefit Dinner. This year we're hosting keynote speaker, Peter Meijer, chairman of the Student Veterans of America. We will be awarding Dr. John J.H. Schwarz with the SVAUM Lifetime Achievement Award. Proceeds will go to the creation of a student veteran scholarship, and to support leadership, employment and mentorship initiatives for student veterans at the University of Michigan.




Timeline:

Tenderloin encrusted with blue cheese and served with a Cabernet reduction

Frenched chicken breast stuffed with parmesan and sun-dried tomato, roasted and seasoned with balsamic vinegar, drizzled with basil oil

  • Fish - Maple Tamari Salmon

Grilled salmon with signature tamari glaze

  • Vegetarian - Quinoa Patties on Wilted Spinach

Topped with oven-roasted tomato saffron coulis and toasted walnuts

A VIP ticket purchase sponsors a ticket for a student veteran to come to the benefit dinner.

Peter Meijer:

Peter Meijer is an Iraq veteran and Chairman of Student Veterans of America. After graduating from Columbia University, Peter volunteered extensively with Team Rubicon and worked from 2013 to 2015 in Afghanistan as a conflict analyst for NGOs. He completed an MBA from NYU in 2017, and currently works in socially-minded redevelopment of near-core residential areas in the midwest. Peter also contributed to 'The Road Ahead' fiction anthology and serves on the Advisory Board of the 'With Honor' Super PAC aiming to elect moderate veterans to Congress.




Dr. John J.H. "Joe" Schwarz

John J.H. "Joe" Schwarz received his undergraduate degree in history from the University of Michigan in 1959, and his medical degree from Wayne State University in 1964. Dr. Schwarz served his residency in otolaryngology at Harvard, finishing in 1974. He has been in private practice in Battle Creek, Michigan for 37 years. Dr. Schwarz served in Southeast Asia for five years, first with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam and as Assistant Naval Attaché in Indonesia. He then served with the Central Intelligence Agency in Laos and in Vietnam. Dr. Schwarz was a City Commissioner then Mayor of Battle Creek, from 1979 until 1986.

He was in the Michigan Senate from 1987 until 2002, serving as President Pro Tempore of the Senate from 1993 until 2002. From 2005 to 2007 he was a Member of Congress where he served on the House Armed Services Committee. Dr. Schwarz was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan from 2004 until 2006, and serves on numerous boards and commissions. As a lecturer at the Ford School, he teaches Topics in Public Policy: Congress and State Legislatures.

Between 2007 and 2010, Dr. Schwarz taught and mentored the founding leaders of Student Veterans of America (SVA) at the University of Michigan and SVA nationally. During this time he advised the student veterans in creating and advocating for policy proposals, which led to the creation of new programs for military veterans at the University of Michigan and throughout the State of Michigan. Additionally, he advised the SVA leaders on how to as they successfully lobbied Congress for the passage of the Post 9/11 GI Bill, which was signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2008. Much of this organization's early success can be credited to Dr. Schwarz for his mentorship, and care for the young men and women who served our nation in uniform.
