Requirement #5:

Take a hike of 20-continuous miles (5-peak challenge in September)

The Back Bay Loop Trail provides an exciting opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to discover a magnificent regional trail experience at the Bay. The 10.5 mile Trail is well-signed as it winds around Upper Newport Bay, with scenic stops at places like Upper Castaways Park, the County of Orange’s Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center, the new Back Bay Science Center at Shellmaker Island, and Big Canyon. The Back Bay Loop Trail also links with the 22-mile Mountains to Sea trail - this National Recreational Trail runs from Upper Newport Bay through Irvine past Peters Canyon Reservoir and into the rugged mountains of Weir Canyon north of Irvine Regional Park.

The Back Bay Loop Trail has multiple entry points, with opportunities for scenic stops and visits to local nature and educational facilities, including:

  • Back Bay Science Center at Shellmaker Island
  • Newport Aquatic Center
  • Upper Castaways Park
  • Environmental Nature Center
  • Mariners Park and Library
  • Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve
  • Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center
  • Back Bay View Park
  • Big Canyon

BSA Native Plants Award Requirements:

1. Complete a day or weekend hike of at least 5 miles round trip.

2. Each Scout will begin a plant and tree log book for identifying at least 10 local native plants or trees. When completed the log book must contain an identifying sketch or picture of each plant and tree and enough words that will help the Scout to identify the plants and trees to others. (Note: If a Scout only knows how to identify an oak tree by its acorns then he would have one of the items for his log book. On the other hand, if a Scout knew the difference between a Coast Live Oak and a Canyon Live Oak, he would have two items for his log book.)
3. Each Scout will identify at least 4 local native plants or trees on this hike and enter them into the log book.
4. The local native plant and tree log book must be completed within 3 months of the hike. Scouts who have previously passed First Class requirement 6 must also make their own log book.
5. Each Scout should know how to identify local poisonous or irritating plants such as Poison Oak and stinging nettles and how to treat for exposure to them. (Tenderfoot requirement 11)

LA Lone Scouts Mandarin Social Adventurers

LA Lone Scouts are registered directly with the Western Los Angeles County Council (WLACC) of the Boy Scouts of America. LA Lone Scouts consists of one Lone Scout Counselor (similar to Scoutmaster) and 3-5 Lone Scouts (youth 12-17 years old). We are NOT a business. We are NOT a school. We are ONE ADULT VOLUNTEER + Three TEENAGERS = no scholarships for other scouts to join us on our outings...we fundraise for our own teenagers to go on scout events.

Mandarin Social Adventurers is a Parent-run club for families with children from 6-18 years old who enjoy going to places regardless of school choice (traditional, public, private, charter, Homeschool, etc.). Our adventures are (1) FUN and (2) related to one or more of the following disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Music, and Mandarin!
