Earlier this summer, Yahoo! announced that it would be recycling email addresses that have been inactive for at least one year. Yahoo! made this decision to reward their loyal users and provide them with an opportunity to register for the Yahoo! ID they’ve always wanted.
For example, let’s say you received the email address EarlTheCat123123@yahoo.com when you first signed up for Yahoo!. Now, with Yahoo! recycling, you could put yourself on a wait list to reclaim the email EarlTheCat@yahoo.com as long as the email is not active. While this may result in you getting that cool email address you’ve always wanted, it may also result in people who have Yahoo! addresses but do not actively sign into Yahoo! sites losing control over their mail. Not a problem if you don’t use your Yahoo! mail for anything, but potentially a big problem if you use your login for third party sites like your bank, your credit card, or even Eventbrite!
What does this mean for you and your Eventbrite account?
Given Yahoo! is recycling email addresses that have gone unused for 12 months, you’ll want to make sure that the email associated with your Eventbrite account is not one that is going to be recycled. If you are a Yahoo! customer whose email address has been recycled, there is a chance that the new owner of the email address could gain access to your Eventbrite account. Therefore, it’s important for the security of your account to ensure that the email address you use with your Eventbrite account is not available to anyone else.
If you have not logged into your Yahoo! account in some time, we strongly recommend you:
1. Attempt to log into your Yahoo! account at http://login.yahoo.com
2. If you are unable to log in, attempt to recover your account through their “Forgot Password” links.
3. If you are still unable to gain access to your account, then you should log into Eventbrite and update your email address here: www.eventbrite.com/account
To change your account email in Eventbrite:
1. Log into your Eventbrite account.
2. Click on your email address in the upper right hand corner, then select Account.
3. Click on the green Change button located next to your current email address.
4. Update with your current email address and save. Voila!
We’ve been doing our best at Eventbrite to proactively reach out to people we know may have addresses that are on Yahoo!’s list of recycled addresses. While we’re doing our best to contact these users, we may not have a full and complete list of those addresses. If you think you may be affected, consider reaching out to Yahoo! with any questions or concerns.
Your account security is very important, and since we identify Yahoo!’s new policy as a potential area of concern, we wanted to bring it to your attention so that you can take the proper steps to secure your account. If you have any questions or concerns, we’re here for you 24/7! Feel free to call or email us anytime: Eventbrite.com/contact-us
