We’re Mental for the Maker Movement

One phrase you’ll likely hear if you spend any time at one of our offices is ‘Make it happen!’. Ok, so maybe Tim Gunn coined it first, but at Eventbrite we’re constantly inspired by the Make It Happen Spirit of our community of event organizers. And, no stranger to the Make It Happen Spirit, is the Maker Community itself.

But what is the Maker Movement, you say? Let’s take a step back.

If you’re not familiar with the most current definition of DIY (Do It Yourself), let us give you a bit of a refresher. These days, the term is less used for things like ‘how to change a tire’ and now much broader. The term now refers to any activity that uses an element of creative skills to make or design something on your own, from scratch. This could mean anything from building your own headboard, to yarn-bombing (*see below) a bench on the Embarcadero outside of the Ferry Building in San Francisco.

The Maker Movement, is the evolution of thousands (and thousands) of people who are creating and selling their self-made products. These products can be anything and everything from typical items you might associate with crafts or DIY (What a lovely macrame curtain you have there!) to technology related (3D printing, anyone?!) to home improvement (Check out this sweet headboard I made, honey!).

One of the biggest names in the Maker Movement right now is Brit Morin, founder and CEO of Brit + Co. Brit + Co is one of the leading communities for creative living, making, and doing in the digital age and in the true Make It Happen Spirit, Brit and her fellow Makers are bringing the excitement of their online community offline with their annual Re:Make event happeningin two cities this year, Austin, TX and San Francisco, CA.

Thousands of our favorite makers (designers, technologists, chefs, innovators, oh my!) will be coming together at these gatherings in both cities to celebrate how technology is re-inventing the way we make.

What is Re:Make? Re:Make is a two-day event that brings together a creative community of makers, inventors, and designers. Come to shop awesome handmade, innovative, and one-of-a-kind goods from makers across the country. Try your hand at a creative DIY project, or learn something new from an expert in their craft. If you’re…If you’re in Austin on May 3 & 4th, or San Francisco on September 12th & 13th, you won’t want to miss out on this epic Meeting of the Makers!
