With the end of summer in NYC comes the close of another festival season. To many New Yorkers, the last big hurrah is AfroPunk Fest, which emerged from the 2003 documentary Afro-Punk: The Rock. Director James Spooner and others in New York City’s Afro-punk scene began hosting concerts, and from that, AfroPunk Fest was born. Ten years later, AfroPunk still embodies diversity and non-conformity, which can be seen in every aspect of the festival, from attendees, to support of local artists, and most importantly, the brilliant lineup.

To commemorate AfroPunk Festival’s 10th anniversary on August 23-24 in Brooklyn, we bring you Eventbrite’s 6 tips for festival fun:

1. Ditch the bag

Most festivals don’t allow large bags or backpacks, which get real annoying real fast. Cut down on extra stuff by storing your tickets, schedule, and other important info on your phone.

2. Come with a plan

Between the music, food trucks, skate park, artists, and activities, AfroPunk (like many festivals) is a smorgasbord of awesome. Review the schedule with friends, and agree on a game plan ahead of time so you can each experience what matters most.

3. Prepare for the elements

Remember that time Governors Ball got hit with a tropical storm, or Googa Mooga got rained out? Being stuck in that situation wearing only a bikini and flip flops is far from fun, so think carefully about the elements before leaving home.

4. Pre-game with a playlist

Our favorite thing about festivals is that they allow you to indulge in old favorites while making new finds. Get excited ahead of time with a playlist like this one, celebrating the women of AfroPunk 2014.

5. Protect your tech

Again, being out in the elements can get ugly. Leave your telephoto lens and iPad at home. If it’s raining, most touch screen phones will work through a Ziplock bag. Bring a charging case, or one that stores your ID and cash, and you’re good to go!

6. Early bird gets the deal

Many festivals have flash sales or early bird deals, so be on the lookout. AfroPunk accepts volunteers, and Flavorpill is offering $10 off Fast Pass Admission to the Fest. Always be aware of your source–when in doubt, check with the event organizers for official ticketing partners.

Ready to sweat, skate, mosh, and shout it out at this massive, multi-cultural festival? Grab a ticket to skip the line, or get the full VIP experience. See you in Brooklyn!
