Southern Machine Exposure Project (SMEP)
June 11- June 30, 2012

Announcing 20 events featuring 40 artists and performers from LA and SF, inside 20 homes in the Bay Area, commemorated by 20 posters, designed by 20 designers from SF and LA, and documented by 20 videos.

Southern Exposure (San Francisco) and Machine Project (Los Angeles) invite you to visit your neighbors’ apartments, houses, backyards, and garages for 20 consecutive days/evenings of performances, psychic readings, workshops, ghost detectioning, participatory foley effects, tableaux vivants, pet portraits, experimental music by dogs, low frequency sound performances (in closets), and general awesomeness throughout the month of June.

Each event features a collaboration, double bill, or blind date between artists and performers from Los Angeles and San Francisco, and is commemorated by a series of posters by San Francisco and Los Angeles designers. Events take place off-site in residences throughout San Francisco and Oakland. Southern Exposure’s 20th Street space serves as the production headquarters and meeting space for project participants and screens daily video documentation of each event as it accumulates throughout the project.

Southern Machine Exposure Project events all take place in private homes that serve as public venues. As a result of the intimate nature of these 20 unique spaces there is limited attendance for each event. If you'd like to attend, you must sign up ahead of time and register online at http://www.eventbrite.com/org/994232247. Registration for each project opens 7 days prior to the actual event. One new project opens daily at noon beginning June 4, 2012. Times and audience capacity varies for each project. Pre-registration is REQUIRED and all events are FREE.

Southern Exposure (SoEx) is an artist-centered non-profit organization that is committed to supporting visual artists. Through our extensive and innovative programming, SoEx strives to experiment, collaborate and further educate while providing an extraordinary resource center and forum for Bay Area and national artists in our Mission District space and off-site, in the public realm.

An active presence in the Bay Area since 1974, SoEx is continually evolving in response to the needs of artists and the community while engaging the public in artists’ work. Central to our mission is to remain the most accessible space for visual artists to produce and present new work, learn, and connect. SoEx provide visual artists with the tools and resources they need to experiment in an open and supportive environment. We also work to advocate to new, diverse audiences and build an ever-growing community of enthusiasts and supporters of the visual arts.

About Machine Project:
Machine Project is a non-profit performance and installation space investigating art, technology, natural history, science, music, literature, and food in an informal storefront in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Machine Project also operates as a loose confederacy of artists producing shows at locations ranging from beaches to museums to parking lots. Machine has produced shows with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver, the Contemporary Art Museum St Louis, and the Walker Museum in Minneapolis and has recently concluded a year-long artist residency addressing topics of public engagement at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.
