Society for the Preservation of Historic Oakwood
The Society for the Preservation of Historic Oakwood (SPHO) was founded in 1972 to preserve and protect Raleigh's only intact 19th century neighborhood when it was threatened with demolition for a new highway. The SPHO successfully stoped the construction of the North-South Expressway and the entire neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places. Today the SPHO continues to preserve the charm of the historic distrcit by saving houses in distress and promoting a sense of neighborlyness through events, newsletters and surrounding neighborhood outreach.
