Read Out and Read Kansas City began in 1997 as a collaboration between pediatricians at Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics and KU Pediatrics at KU Medical Center. The unique partnership continues to thrive today and has grown to a coalition of 50 clinic sites in greater Kansas City with an emphasis on serving our community's most vulnerable children at-risk for reading and school failure.
Reach Out and Read Kansas City makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric care so that children grow up with access to books, engaged parents, and enter school ready to learn. Reach Out and Read Kansas City is the only medically-based early literacy program improving the quality of life and health for over 28,000 predominantly at-risk Kansas City young children (birth-5years) and families. Each year, more than 72,000 books are distributed annually in clinics that help promote reading readiness and school success.
