Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF)

About the IVMF

There are 22.5 million veterans in the United States, and more than 2.5 million Americans have served our country in uniform since 2001. History suggests that our nation's veterans will face formidable social and economic challenges throughout their post-service life course. The resources and capabilities of higher education are well positioned to inform and impact many of these challenges. Unfortunately, these resources and capabilities have never been coordinated and leveraged on a national scale, to serve our nation's veterans.

In June 2011, Syracuse University made an institutional commitment to launch the nationally-focused Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), a historical first in the context of higher education. To support this effort, JPMorgan Chase (JPMC) broadened its existing collaboration with the University to provide industry leadership. The mission of the IVMF is to fully leverage the intellectual, human and social capital of higher education, in service to America's veterans and their families. To this end, the IVMF seeks to develop and nurture a community of interdisciplinary scholarship—including the arts, humanities, social sciences, business, medicine, education and law—positioned to investigate and confer insight into the social, psychological and economic issues impacting this community. The institute will develop education and employment-focused programs in collaboration with industry, government, NGOs and the veteran community, to address the primary economic and public policy concerns of our nation's servicemen and women, and their families.
