BIG: Blacks in Green

BIG™ is a national network for advancing “greenvillagebuilding” – our signature initiative. We are one of America’s most diverse eco-orgs, a national network launched in Chicago in 2007, and a thought leader in green community economic development for communities of color. Our vision is selfsustaining black communities everywhere. We teach a whole-system solution for the whole-system problem common to black communities everywhere through our platform, Green-Village-Building™ and Grannynomics.™  Together these offer a culture-specific prescription with universal value. Our mission is sustainability one square-mile at a time - where every household can walk-to-work, walk-to-shop, walk-to-learn, walk-to-play. Our success measure is the increase in African American household income which circulates to build community wealth. Our strategy is to 1) increase the rate at which neighbor-owned businesses are created and sustained; 2) build the capacity of neighbors to own, develop, and manage the property in their community; and 3) foster the conservation lifestyle ~ the beautiful life. Thus, we work to build the local living economy as greenhouse gas reduction strategy within black communities, and reinvent metropolitan resilience via “The City of Villages.”
