To serve as the focal point for the Art and Culture in the Bayview Hunters Point community by providing accessible and diverse, high-quality arts education, cultural programs and community events in a safe environment.
To pursue high standards of excellence in arts instruction and diverse programming, to encourage youth to participate in the arts, to foster a sense of community and cultivate relationships that are respectful, inspirational and inclusive.
The South San Francisco Opera House, as it was originally called, opened on October 4, 1888 by Masonic Lodge #212, to house art performances and community gatherings. Now called the Bayview Opera House Ruth Williams Memorial Theater, the historic building is over 125 years old and is known for being the city’s oldest opera house.
The San Francisco Arts Commission purchased the Opera House in the 1970's as part of an effort to bring more art into the communities. Today the Bayview Opera House is one of four city-owned cultural centers operated by local nonprofit organizations providing cultural and arts programming to under-served communities in San Francisco.
The historic building is San Francisco's historic landmark building No. 8 and as of April 1, 2011 was inaugurated into the National Register of Historic Places.
What we Do:
The Opera House is available for rent for both public and private events, with a focus on providing affordable space to artists and arts organizations producing cultural events.
Bayview Opera House produces and presents many performances, art exhibits and other activities that engage the community in the arts, create employment opportunities for artists and support local merchants by bringing more people to the Bayview Town Center with the Bayview Opera House as the anchor institution.
