An integrative night of art and education through music, spoken word, artwork and powerful speech, designed to raise awareness around sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo!

Women's Organization of Rebirth Through Healing (W.O.R.T.H.) a non-for-profit organization www.youreworthit.org is producing an event to raise awareness surrounding violent sexual rape in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This event amongst others will be a platform to raise awareness through spoken word, poetry and artist performances. The first annual W.O.R.T.H Benefit is being held as a means of raising money for Panzi Hospital in the Congo.  Dr. Denis Mukwege is the lone physician at Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, that specializes in treating women and children who have survived sexual violence. Dr. Mukwege and Panzi hospital have been featured in Oprah’s O Magazine, Anderson Cooper’s CNN special, among a host of other media outlets. Panzi Hospital was inaugurated in 1992. It was initially built for 120 beds but the total number of beds are now 324. The average number of patients hospitalized per month is 410 persons. The mission of Panzi Hospital is to:

·     Improve the quality of medical care for the population

·     Reduce the maternal and infant death rate

·     Provide treatment of the survivor of sexual violence and surgical repair for women suffering from fistulas of the uro-genital tract.

This Benefit is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 8, 2008 (International Women’s Day) from 9:30pm – 2am @ Bar 13 (121 University Place, New York, NY)
