Borderlands: A Conversation about Immigration & the Arts
CounterPULSE, 1310 Mission St, SF, CA
FREE!
Leading thinkers, activists and artists gather to discuss some of the issues raised by the Performing Diaspora performances and the Living Past visual arts exhibition in an interactive, participatory conversation hosted by the Alliance for California Traditional Arts, the California Institute for Integral Studies, and CounterPULSE.
Participating Panelists: Sherwood Chen, Lydia Nakashima Degarrod, Kutay Kugay, Jessica Robinson Love, Amitis Motevalli, Prumsodun Ok, Omar Pimienta, Devendra Sharma, Pallavi Sharma, Deirdre Visser
(1) How does being an artist from an ethnic minority and/or traditional form limit what audiences/museums/galleries expect from you? How can immigrant artists use and be empowered by their cultural capital (immigration as an asset)?
(2) When and how does the idea and perception of the Homeland for an immigrant artist become frozen or static in time, and how does this relate to innovation within traditional forms?
(3) How does the classification of an art form, popular vs. folk vs. classical, play into the consumption and perception of innovation within visual or performance traditions? How is this relationship historically situated? How do the experiences and creative choices within an artist’s new home allow for the freedom to work in a form without the limits of that form’s perception in the home country? Does this enrich/progress his/her art form in both the new home and the traditional home?
(4) Is art (and are artists) impacting or even addressing the relevant and practical issues and experience of immigration today?
About the Performing Diaspora Program
Borderlands is part of CounterPULSE’s Performing Diaspora Program. Performing Diaspora is a festival, residency program, commissioning program, and symposium featuring dance, music, theater, media and interdisciplinary artists who are using traditional forms as a basis for experimentation and innovation.
From Kathak to Flamenco and from Tabla to Taiko, California is home to many diverse and talented practitioners of traditional performance. Despite this abundance, few opportunities exist for artists who wish to challenge, expand or experiment with their own traditional art forms. Many of these artists have begun to flock to CounterPULSE, an organization with a long-standing reputation for nurturing experimentation.
The inaugural year of Performing Diaspora culminated with a festival November 5-22, 2009 at CounterPULSE. A select number of Festival artists were commissioned to create full-length pieces at CounterPULSE in the Fall of 2010.
Upcoming Performing Diaspora events:
- Oct 28-31 - Devendra Sharma, Nautanki Theater
- Oct 28-Jan 9 - The Living Past: Innovating Tradition in the Arts, A group gallery exhibition co-curated by Lydia Nakashima Degarrod and Deirdre Visser
- Nov 11-21 - Adia Tamar Whitaker, Afro-haitian Folkloric Dance
Or stay tuned for updates by joining the CounterPULSE mailing list.
Performing Diaspora is made possible by support from the Columbia Foundation, the James Irvine Foundation, the Ken Hempel Fund for the Arts, the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, the San Francisco Arts Commission, the Walter & Elise Haas Fund, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the members of CounterPULSE.
