At our February luncheon, Astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria and NASA Assistant Administrator Michael O'Brien will speak about:
  • completion of the build-out of the International Space Station (ISS)
  • replacement of the Shuttle with the yet-to-be-built Orion vehicle
  • going back to the Moon and to Mars
  • challenges of the future

You'll be the first U.S. audience to hear this presentation, which NASA recently presented in Geneva, Switzerland at a high-level meeting of all international space agencies.

About the Speakers

NASA Astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria (Captain, USN) will discuss his experiences in travelling to and living in space and conducting leading-edge technological discovery.

Following his first space flight he served as NASA Director of Operations at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, in Star City, Russia. After his second mission, he led the International Space Station (ISS) Operations branch of the Astronaut Office. Following his third spaceflight, he was assigned as the technical liaison to JSC's Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Office. A veteran of four space flights, Lopez-Alegria has logged over 257 days in space, and performed 10 spacewalks totaling 67 hours and 40 minutes of EVA.

Michael F. O'Brien, NASA Assistant Administrator for External Relations, is responsible for external relations including the White House and international partners. O'Brien led the team that negotiated the Memoranda of Understandings (MOUs) to build the International Space Station (ISS), which now includes 14 countries including Russia.

O'Brien is responsible for NASA's interaction with Executive Branch offices and agencies; international relations for each NASA Enterprise; administration of export control and international technology transfer programs; the NASA History Office; NASA advisory councils and commissions and will lead off with an update of NASA programs and plans.
