Moving CCS from Research to Commercial Deployment: Pending Regulations, Public Perceptions and Public Outreach

Dr. James Myers, Department of Geology and Geophysics and Director of the Wyoming CCS Technology Institute

The fee includes refreshments, class notes, and PDH certificate

Successful commercialization of geological carbon capture and storage (GCCS) will require a regulatory framework that protects human health and the environment as well as assures the public that sequestration sites are selected equitably and transparently. In addition, the public must be confident that the risk of sequestration is minimal and the environmental benefits outweigh the economic and social costs. This short course will examine the regulatory framework that is being developed for GCCS in the United States. In particular, it will discuss EPA and DOE guidelines for site selection and risk assessment and the evolving guides for the new UIC Class VI wells. At the same time, it will examine current perception of the public (both nationally and internationally) of GCCS and recommended guidelines for GCCS project public outreach.
