Israeli-born New York artist Yael Kanarek looks at how language and numbers operate an emotional landscape. Inspired by her own upbringing, Kanarek draws from the multilingual landscape of her childhood in Israel working with Hebrew, Arabic and English words in her large-scale textwork installations. Kanarek is interested in how languages shape space and how their presence in space signifies cultural territory and sovereignty. What opportunities emerge when languages intersect? Yael Kanarek tests this idea by shuffling around the languages that make up the semantic landscape of her childhood. Next to one another, English, Hebrew and Arabic generate a charged, nervous space to navigate, and her artworks are born in this nervous space. Her talk will describe her use of formalistic tools - configuration, shape, and shadow – to construct dynamic, typographic fields.
