Event Details

The Cambridge Super 8 Group in association with ideaSpace will be showing a Best of Fest selection from the 2010 Cambridge International Super 8 Film Festival. Come along and learn more about old cine films and home movies. See how this retro, analogue film medium has maintained its cult status in the digital age. The Group will also hold a Q&A session and give a taster of their forthcoming Home Movie Day event at the Cambridge & County Folk Museum.

Tea, Coffee & Beer will be available.

What is Super 8?

In 1965, Kodak, the company that introduced snapshot photography to the masses, repeated history when it replaced its Standard 8mm movie film with the modified Super-8mm format. With its self loading cartridge system, wider screen ratio and richer colour film stock, Super-8 created an instant consumer and cultural revolution.  Cheap, portable and easy to use, Super-8 drove amateur pornography into a global industry, introduced the moving image to developing countries, and spawned a plethora of Super 8 related gadgets and toys. At its peak in the 1970s, Super 8 had become the most widely used film format in the world. It saw its commercial demise through video yet re-emerged with cult status – its alchemic qualities and cerebral aesthetic being championed by a new generation of art film and documentary makers. Now in the 2010s, Super-8’s appeal continues to grow with film festivals emerging all over the world.
