The Griffin, in the Sussex village of Fletching, is a bit of a surprise. It’s quiet but not too quiet; posh, but not too posh; impressive without being flash. The Griffin, I feel, is one of those great places that hasn't quite been discovered, like Notting Hill back in the Seventies.
For my starter, I ordered scallops with a relish made from tomatoes, coriander and bits of chorizo. The scallops had been seared in a hot pan, like little steaks, and were perfect. I had a fillet steak with mash, but not too much of it, and a kind of ultra-garlic gravy, which would stay with me for the next 24 hours. The meat itself was softer than I had expected, like a huge, beefy scallop. Apéritifs of your choice will be served.
