 Military Project Management

Presentation Overview

LCol Gilmore will discuss some of his experiences in Kandahar and the challenges of providing engineer services in Afghanistan. In particular, he will highlight some of the unique aspects of military project management as part of a multi-national NATO mission to stabilize this remote, war-torn country.

 Speaker Bio

LIEUTENANT-COLONEL MIKE GILMORE, CD, BEng, MSc, P.Eng

LCol Gilmore joined the Canadian Forces in 1986. He completed a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at the Royal Military College in Kingston in 1991 and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering at Imperial College, UK, in 1992.

He has filled command appointments with Combat Engineer Regiments across Canada and has served as a staff officer with 1 Canadian Division and the Canadian Forces Joint Headquarters. He is currently the G3 for Land Force Western Area and is responsible to manage all Army operations, training and force generation in Western Canada.

His overseas deployments include a year in Cambodia with the UN as a Technical Advisor for humanitarian demining, several months in Eritrea as the Task Force Engineer for the joint Canadian-Dutch UN contingent, and four years at NATO Headquarters in Brussels.

Most recently, LCol Gilmore was the Chief Engineer for Joint Task Force - Afghanistan in 2009. In that capacity, he was responsible for the provision of all engineer support to Canadian Forces operations including the construction and maintenance of all Canadian infrastructure in Kabul, Kandahar and the UAE, the maintenance of major roads and bridges throughout Kandahar province, and the provision of engineer expertise and support for stability operations with the Afghan population.

LCol Gilmore has been a licensed P.Eng since 2001 and has been a member of APEGGA since moving back to Alberta in 2008.
