UK Online News Association and Index on Censorship invite you to Bloggers in the Dock:

Over the last year journalists, writers and bloggers have found themselves in court defending cases of libel and anonymity. The rulings have been significant and a catalyst for change.

What the Labour government started the coalition government have continued, recently setting out plans to review the libel laws to better protect freedom of speech and expression in the media and the research sector, and to cut down on "libel tourism.

But will the changes be enough? Together we will explore these issues with Mark Stephens, David Osler and Sile Lane.

Mark Stephens is an expert on US and UK libel law and is a frequent contributor on UK news broadcasts about media and human rights issues, as well as in his own blogging and public speaking. Mark serves on the boards of a number of non-profit organizations including the Index on Censorship.

David Osler is a journalist with Lloyd's List, the daily shipping and insurance newspaper, and is author of 'Labour Party plc', an examination of the Labour Party's relationship with business. In 2007, he was sued for libel by political activist Johanna Kaschke. The case was struck out in May 2010 by Justice Eady. He blogs at www.davidosler.com

Síle Lane is public liaison at Sense About Science - a charitable trust that equips people to make sense of science and evidence. Sense About Science formed the Libel Reform Campaign with English PEN and Index on Censorship in December 2009 to campaign for a libel reform bill that would protect scientists, bloggers, publishers and journalists from being silenced by England’s libel laws.
