An Introduction to Treasure Trove

Have you been presented with newly discovered finds (or old finds) at your museum, for example objects or coins excavated locally or found by metal detectors, or by chance?   Have you been unsure what to next?  Do you know about the law of bona vacantia in Scotland that covers all such found objects and legally makes them the property of the Crown until they enter the Treasure Trove process? Are you interested in how your museum could acquire items identified as Treasure Trove? Would you like to develop the relationship your museum service has with the Treasure Trove unit (based at National Museums Scotland but an independent body working on behalf of the Crown)?

This workshop, run in conjunction with the Treasure Trove unit, is part of our ‘2011 afternoon series’. It aims to give a basic introduction to the Treasure Trove process for those unfamiliar with the scheme and will explain the paperwork and procedures for registering Treasure Trove finds and/or acquiring items. There will be opportunities to share experience and hear from other local museums that play an active role in the Treasure Trove process. There will also be time to meet colleagues and network.
