An introduction to Roman archaeology in Scotland

‘The Romans’ is just one popular topic museums are often asked to develop as an experience for their visitors.  Not everyone has access to Roman artefacts or specialist knowledge of Roman material. National Museums Scotland has important collections in this area and is involved in a number of initiatives to develop knowledge about them and their public use.

This workshop aims to share information on what Roman material is likely to be found in Scottish collections and develop participants’ confidence in identifying typical objects and putting them in context. The morning will focus on examining pottery, small finds and commonly metal-detected items.  The afternoon will share some examples of National Museums Scotland’s current collections, programmes and projects involving Roman material.

The majority of the day will be structured around discussion of actual objects and relevant projects. The workshop will concentrate on offering practical advice, sharing National Museums Scotland practice through case studies and providing information on sources and networks for further advice.  There will be time throughout the day to meet colleagues and share information.
