Himalayan Collections in Scottish Museums

Understanding Himalayan material means understanding a complex geographical area and intricate history. In museum terms the ‘Himalayas’ can broadly be understood to mean Tibet, Bhutan, Sikkim and the north-eastern part of Nepal. However, the legacy of these traditionally nomadic communities means that material culture from Indian provinces such as Jammu, Kashmir and Himachel Pradesh could also be included under this bracket, making the interpretation and evaluation of these collections a very challenging task.

Focusing on collectors such as Annie Royle Taylor, J.W. Innes Wright, Colonel F.M. Bailey, Major Rybot, Lillian Le Mesurier and Dr Duncan Metcalfe Morrison this workshop aims to give museum professionals the opportunity to discover more about local and national collectors of Himalayan material. The day will be structured around discussion of the typical types of material found in Himalayan collections in Scotland and sharing knowledge on identification tips, effective curation and care of Himalayan objects based on National Museums Scotland experience. The workshop will also allow for discussion on developing the use of such material in local museums.

If you are interested in attending the workshop but would like more information on what will be covered and how you can participate please contact the course leader on inbal.livne@stir.ac.uk
