AIA Grand Valley Membership Lunch Meeting Date: Tuesday October 23rd. Time: 12:00pm – 1:30pm Location: Offices of the Alliance for Environmental Sustainability                    947 Wealthy St. SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 49506                   (Parking on street, or in parking lot behind building) Cost: Free for Grand Valley AIA Members, $10 for non-members. Topic: “Why Thermal Envelopes Fail” – Presented by Mike Holcomb, Alliance for Environmental Sustainability. Our lunch topic this month will be presented to us by Mike Holcomb of the Alliance for Environmental Sustainability.  The topic for this month will be “Why Thermal Envelopes Fail”.  The integrity of a building’s thermal envelope is one of the most critical areas that architects can affect in terms of energy efficiency.  With the renewed interest in sustainable design techniques architects are finding themselves questioning how to make a better thermal envelope.  This month’s presentation will cover the basics of good thermal envelope design and critically examine where failures often occur. Mike Holcomb is an Energy Star rater and an expert in thermal efficiency in buildings.  In addition, Mike is the President of the Environmental Sustainability (AES).  AES was founded in 2000 as a vehicle to bring the residential construction industry into the 21st-century. The goal of the founders was to provide training to builders and homebuyers for environmentally friendly, healthy and energy efficient building practices and products. AES was recently selected to participate in the LEED for Homes pilot program as a provider for the Midwest. AES has trained over 100 builders designers throughout the Midwest.
