This workshop covers the fundamentals of successful nonprofit board membership. Board 101 is designed for volunteers who are interested in joining a board for the first time and for board members wishing to increase their skills and knowledge of nonprofit governance. Participants will gain practical knowledge about key aspects of effective board membership, including governance, legal and financial duties. Additional topics include overview of why nonprofits are governed by boards of directors, staff versus board roles, and what to ask before joining a board.
Presenter Melissa Breach is Director of Programs at the Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership of Marin. She is a former Bay Area Executive Director and Organizational Development Consultant—with extensive experience consulting and training on the issues of governance, organizational sustainability, and change facilitation. She is a former advisory committee member of the California Arts Commission’s Public School Partnership Initiative, as well as a former Board Member of California Partners in Education, Theatre for Young People, and Resourceful Women.
