Event Details

Learn to solder and do basic microcontroller programming in this workshop. The cost of this workshop also covers the materials cost for a freeduino microcontroller kit. Your assembled Freeduino is yours to keep, so you can come up with your own electronic applications. This workshop is intended to teach you necessary skills for further electronic exploration.

Soldering is a skill needed for creating and modifying electronic circuits. A Freeduino is an easily programmable microcontroller. In combination with other electronics, a microcontroller can used for projects such as light controllers, music synthesis, robots, environmental sensors, internet applications, games and many others! Check out the workshop web page for some videos of cool applications.

More information available at http://www.lvl1.org/workshops.

YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO BRING YOUR OWN SOLDERING IRON AND LAPTOP. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A SOLDERING IRON OR LAPTOP, PLEASE EMAIL US AT workshops@lvl1.org AND WE WILL PROVIDE ONE. WE ENCOURAGE THIS FOR YOUR FUTURE INDEPENDENT HACKING ENJOYMENT.

FAQ

Q: Do I need to bring solder or any other materials?

A: No, we will provide all of that. We only encourage you bring a soldering iron and laptop if possible. But those will be provided for attendees that need them.

Q: Do I need a serial connector/adapter to program my Freeduino?

A: No, these Freeduino kits are programmable with a common USB A-B cable we provide. The USB A-B cable is also yours to keep.

Q: What do I need to program my Freeduino?

A: There are several options for programming your Freeduino, but we will use the Arduino provided IDE for this workshop. It's a cross-platform Java program that will work on Windows/Mac/Linux. It can be downloaded here http://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software

Q: What does this Freeduino thing do?

A: Lots of things! Just look at the many videos on youtube with 'arduino' in them: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=arduino&search_type=&aq=f

LVL1 is a Louisville hackerspace.

LVL1's mission is to provide a shared space for collaborative technical and artistic experimentation in the Louisville area. We are a non-profit organization following the hackerspace model currently flourishing in cities all over the world. Our goal is to create an open workspace where engineers, artists and educators can meet and collaborate. LVL1 is where we begin making amazing things.
