PRESENTERS
Presenters from Electronic Ink include Paul Nuschke, Human Factors Analyst, and Liza Potts, Director of Human Factors. Dean Karavite, Manager of Periop Information Systems and Decision Support with Temple University Hospital, will also be presenting.
PRESENTATION DETAILS
Electronic Ink
Picis, a leading high-acuity care (ER, ICU, operating rooms) solution provider, hired Electronic Ink to improve the user interface of its emergency department software, which is used in more than 1,000 critical-care environments worldwide. Electronic Ink will present the "before" state of the interface and discuss challenges, detail their approach to redesigning the interface, and show the dramatically revised final product.
Paul Nuschke, Human Factors Analyst
Paul Nuschke, a Human Factors Analyst for Electronic Ink, is responsible for user research and evaluation of products with a focus on usability. Paul's recent projects include a mobile device "out-of-the-box" usability study for Research in Motion (RIM), requirements analysis and persona development for AIG Claims, and a design and usability assessment and usability testing for Commerce Bank in St. Louis. Paul is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, where he earned a Master of Science in Industrial & Systems Engineering with a focus on Human Factors and HCI.
Liza Potts, Director of Human Factors
As Director of Human Factors at Electronic Ink, Liza Potts heads up a team of cognitive psychologists, anthropologists, quantitative analysts, and user experience architects dedicated to bringing the understanding of target audiences to new levels. With more than 13 years of experience in the development of software and browser-based applications, Liza has built her career as a leader, user experience architect, usability engineer, and project manager for both nimble start-ups and world-renowned powerhouses such as Microsoft. Liza has led teams of human factors scientists, designers, developers, translators, and writers both onsite and abroad; authored corporate guidelines for user interfaces, accessibility, and information design; architected the user experience for numerous software and web applications and conducted the first ever 508 accessibility reviews for Windows Server.
Temple University HospitalDean Karavite will discuss the unique challenges of improving the accessibility of the vast collection of hospital data and the critical role of usability in addressing pressing issues facing hospitals. He will present an overview of how information systems are used to manage every aspect of the operating room - one of most challenging and complex departments in any hospital. Through his experiences, he will show how usability methodologies can help solve a wide range of issues within the hospital environment.
Dean Karavite, Manager of Periop Information Systems and Decision Support
Dean Karavite is Manager or Periop Information Systems and Decision Support at Temple University Hospital. He also has a masters degree in HCI. With seven years experience working with hospital information systems and four years working as a usability specialist for IBM, Dean has developed a unique perspective on the design and functionality of hospital information systems.

ABOUT WORLD USABILITY DAY
World Usability Day (http://www.worldusabilityday.org/ ) was founded to ensure that the services and products important to life are easier to access and simpler to use. Last year, 40,000 people in 35 countries in 175 cities around the world participated in World Usability Day. The second World Usability Day event in Philadelphia at GSI Commerce drew over 100 people to hear talks by Hal Rosenbluth of Take Care Health Systems, James E. Mitchell of Drexel University, and Stephen B. Wilcox of Design Science on “User Experience Beyond The Web”.
The focus for World Usability Day 2007, to be held November 8, 2007, is healthcare. Whether it's new medical devices or technologies; drug research, approval, or delivery; patient forms or medical record sharing; emergency disaster planning; increasing the functionality of hospitals; or everyday healthcare delivery, EVERYONE is affected by usability in healthcare.
